most will disagree, but when it comes to killing animals and then also say protein that to me is a big joke, you can get your protein from other things then meat.. just google vegan protein.

I didn't get far - before subscribing and liking! I was sent her by my friend Jill at 'Ask A Vet Tech'. Some great information here, thank you. I think I'm 'too good' to my hens and have made one egg bound with too much protein. I've given extra to my chicks and turkeys but the hens have gotten into it - now one is egg-bound I think. I'm going to try this - thanks. Hoping I caught it in time. Best from BC.

Enjoyable video as always! I love the last point about learning; it's a real joy, and people are never too old to learn. My grandmother made journals of the things she studied just for the joy of it, and even when she was in the hospital dying of cancer she was still working on a journal about butterflies.

The worst thing I have being a hobby farmer is going on vacation or cruses. there ae things you have to do every day and if you go some where you have to hire some one to take care of your farm. worrying if your animals are being taken care of while your gone.

Some of my favorites are getting to work outside in the sunshine, creating beautiful outdoor spaces for family and guests to enjoy, sharing in the joy of new lives born and growing, fully experiencing the changing seasons, and completing a plan successfully. The down side is the fear of growing old and weak and unable to keep up with the care of things on the homestead.

I love watching my meat birds grow BUT not cleaning out the coop, love all aspects of growing my own food BUT not the pesty insects; love the honey bee's BUT not the occasional stinging; love the flower beds BUT not the.deer.....until the CONS out weigh the PROS, I am sticking with it....thank you all....

Mmmm, I always wanted a bit more than a hobby farm, my goal was something that paid for itself that allowed me to live the lifestyle I wanted, and continue a great off farm career. To just produce for myself… that’s the most expensive food on the planet. It’s cheaper to eat out at the finest restaurants for every meal. It turns out, the demand for organic grain is really strong. 30 year old equipment is from a point in time after farming had been completely revolutionized. It made sense to grow. And grow it did, but as the family grew, we kept the area around the homestead very much “hobby farm” like. It’s the training grounds for the kids to learn about animal husbandry, and to develop a work ethic. The commercial farm really blew up. The old equipment is gone, and the older end of the tribe of hooligans… they are farmers. They get it, it’s in their blood. They can farm as good as anyone, even as teens/tweens.

Hahahahaha! What is this, therapy session or a mid-life crisis reflection? Bwahahaha hahahahaha! Jokes aside. I don't yet have my farm, but I want my land this year, with my chickens as the first hobby farm animals. Having control over where my food comes from (eggs and meat), is important to me. I will NEVER trust any big supermarket, or worse some government to control and supply my food, EVER!

Yesterday my three emdens came together and protected my 7 ducks from a hawk attack by a big hawk, the ducks, mallards and muscovies all gathered around the three geese who made no noise but were obviously not happy about something messing with THEIR ducks ! I’d not seen them do this before so it was interesting to see how they interacted during the situation!

All my cochin hen were broody. My little black hen would steal eggs. She would roll them into her nest. I would have to mark her set eggs, at one time she had 36 eggs in her nest and I was dismayed That I didn't know which were fresh and which one she had been sitting. So I started marking then with chalk and checking her nest everyday. These girls may not lay often but they can raise a huge brood if you happen to have a broody hen the rest will lay in her nest , happy to let her sit the nest.

We rescued a barred rock with four other hens a couple weeks ago. She is so sweet, big chicken, and we love her. She is a loner. Because she was bullied, we had to move her to the big yard with our more mature gentle rooster. He runs a tight ship. No bullying but she prefers to be alone. She loves people more than chickens. ❤
